Carboxy Methyl Cellulose(CMC) is synthesized by the alkali-catalyzed reaction of cellulose with chloroacetic acid. The polar (organic acid) carboxyl groups render the cellulose soluble and chemically reactive. The functional properties of Fooding Carboxy Methyl Cellulose(CMC) depend on the degree of substitution of the cellulose structure (i.e., how many of the hydroxyl groups have taken part in the substitution reaction), as well as the chain length of the cellulose backbone structure and the degree of clustering of the carboxymethyl substituents.
1. Oil Drilling Industry
In the oil drilling process, carboxymethyl cellulose, as one of the key components of drilling fluid, plays an important role in thickening, reducing filtration loss, and adjusting rheology. As a thickener, CMC can enhance the viscosity of mud and prevent the drilling fluid from losing too quickly through its excellent water retention. During the drilling process, CMC can also effectively improve the cleanliness of the wellbore, reduce the friction of the drill bit, and improve the drilling efficiency.
2. Papermaking Industry
CMC can be used as a modifier for pulp to enhance the bonding force between fibers, thereby enhancing the strength and tear resistance of paper.
